Independent Study for Week 12

Renders (low quality) in site context
Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra

The renders, when photo montaged into Lake Burley Griffin - Canberra, worked better then first anticipated. I was able to find high quality panorama .jpg files, meaning that I had a 360 degree background for the Vitra Sculpture Park.

The Re-envision Function

The re-envision scheme for the Vitra Design Museum is to use the structure of the buildings shape to recreate it into more of a sculpture form, focusing on Frank Gehry's underlining intent of the building, being that of deconstructive sculpture architecture.

This is achieved through the re-design and representation of Gehry's original design’s function, as a multi-story “art installation” sculpture park. The park is be embedded into a pontoon, which floats on a lake whilst maintaining its original scale. The sculpture is composed of a series of weaving white metallic tubes connected to certain points that represent the original location of the building's corners'. The Sculpture possess two levels both in which include various gardens and park features with the main focus being on the buildings amazing architectural form along the mountainous, lakeside scenery of the site.

With the function of a conventional park being a space where people are able to escape from the mundane norms of day-to-day life. This functional setting is ideal for the intended scheme. It allows for those occupying to focus on the beautiful structural form whereas in a regular building the environment is much less leisurely therefore hindering the spaces serenely.

Re-envision Scheme

Architectural beauty is not entirely dependent on the building design; but also reliable on the surrounding landscape. The purpose of the re-envision is to create a beautiful architectural scheme that focus’ on Frank Gehry’s original intent of design, that being to create an exploded-then-reconstructed, free flowing structural form. This is achieved through the utilization of site context as well as the building design.

The re-envision scheme employed is the re-representation of the building as a skeleton-like structure that embodies the shape of the original Vitra Design Museum, which inadvertently emphasises the layout of the sculptural structure.

This along with site context of the structure that being of a lake surrounded by a beautiful, mountainous panorama landscape, helps creates space that allows the user to admire the form of Gehry’s original design. Therefore possessing a scheme that adds a further graceful quality to this already beautiful piece of architecture.

These renders were done in Vray for 3ds max, I was unable to import the trees and plants, so decided to use Vray for Google Sketchup.

I was able to optimize the Vray for Sketchup settings with the aid of tutorials from, to bring the features of the model to the desired quality achieved.

Independent Study for Week 11

Initial Re-envision Renders

Textures, Styling and Representation
With the intent of the re-envision being to focus on the buildings architectural form, textures will be kept to a minimum. The employed textures will be utilised to emphasise the architectural form of the structure, being focused around the lake and mountains of the new site context. The reflection of the lake is a one of the main textures used in the re-envision scheme.

The structural spine will be entirely composed of a shiny white metallic tubing. After experimentation with numerous textures, the juxtaposition of the white texture when reflected upon the water, seemed most fittingly in being harmonious with the floating park and its mountainous surroundings. After researching many similar styled sculptures, I also found that the simplicity of white had a strong aesthetic appeal, which was very suitable to the re-envision scheme.

In accordance with the re-envisions new function being a park, allot of natural park orientated textures will be used, which make up the tiles, ground cover, trees, flowers, park benches and bins. These includes sandstone, grass, bark, leafs, flower stems, flower petals, wood and metal

Concept of Re-representation

The re-envision scheme for the Vitra Design Museum is to use the structure of the buildings shape to recreate it into more of a sculpture form, focusing on Frank Gehry's underlining intent of the building, being that of deconstructive sculpture architecture.

This will be achieved by re-designing and representing Gehry's original design's function as a multi-story park. The park is going to be imbedded into a pontoon, which will float on a lake whilst maintaining its original scale. The sculpture is going to be composed of a series of weaving metallic tubes connected to certain points that represent the original location of the building's corners'. The Sculpture will be possess two levels both in which will include various gardens and park features with the main focus being on the buildings amazing architectural form along the mountainous scenery of the site.

Week 9 - Studio Tasks

The Direction of our Vitra Design Museum Re-envision

A possible re-envision of Frank Gehry's elegant array of sculptural objects, could be to use the layout of sculptural shapes in more of a natural flowing organic form, similar to that of the image above. Applying a scheme such as this to our re-envision could help emphasise the form of the structure and add a further graceful quality to this already beautiful piece of architecture.

Architectural beauty is not entirely dependant on the building design; it is also reliable on the surrounding landscape. Employing a similar site context to that of the above image, could posses a beautiful architectural scheme. Using the reflection of water, could be an amazing juxtaposition, showcasing the lighting scheme on the complex shapes, being mirrored on the water.

Model Geometric Match up

The overall layout of the building is geometrically matching.

With the direction of my Vitra Design Museum re-envision scheme being to focus on the exterior form of the structure, interior modeling is not relevant

Week 9 - Independent Study

Frank Gehry - Vitra Design Museum 1990
Group Research

Vitra, a furniture company, have looked to variety of renowned architects to design the buildings that make up their manufacturing complex in Basel, Germany. These architects include Alvaro Siza, Nicholas Grinshaw, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry.
The Vitra Design Museum which is the hub of the complex was Frank Gehry’s first building in Europe and was created with the help of Lorach Architect, Gunter Pfeifer. The museum houses temporary exhibitions on themes of furniture design, a research library and a restoration and conservation laboratory. It also holds workshops and organizes guided tours of the Vitra Premises.

Frank Gehry’s Vitra Design Museum stands out as an architectural attraction in its own right nestling itself in an industrial plant cross model village environment. Gehry has used his trademark deconstructivist style in this building to a tee and unlike his previous buildings such as the Loyola Law School. Frank has consciously limited his use of materials in this design in order to not compete with the exhibitions the building is designed to hold. However unlike his previous work Gehry has utilized white plaster and titanium to create curved forms that break up the more angular components of this building. The whit curved form echo those of the Notre Dame de Haut chapel by famous architect Le Corbusier.

Architecural critic Paul Heyer describes the experience of the interior of the building as…
“... a continuous changing swirl of white forms on the exterior, each seemingly without apparent relationship to the other, with its interiors a dynamically powerful interplay, in turn directly expressive of the exterior convolutions. As a totality it resolves itself into an entwined coherent display…”

Case Study

Frank Gehry - Walt Disney Concert Hall 2003

The Walt Disney Concert Hall, which is located in downtown LA is a tribute to Walt Disney and his devotion to art. Designed by Frank Gehry and constructed from 1999 to 2003, this building is deconstructive sculpture architecture at its finest. The exploded-then-reconstructed free flowing objects are placed in such a way, that the building becomes an elegantly proportioned sculpture, demonstrating Frank Gehrys recognisable iconoclast style.
